Language Arts & Social Studies
Asalaamu Alaykum!
About Our Class
For Language Arts, students cover Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Spelling, and Writing. Students read and analyze as a class Newberry or Caldecott Award winning novels as well as short stories and poems. Students write a variety of writing pieces such as persuasive, narrative, historical fiction, research papers, poems, and plays. Students read in class self-selected books as well as read at home for 15 minutes a day for homework. Through these activities, the class hopes to build the love of reading in every child.
In Social Studies, the Sixth Graders are studying World Geography. The Seventh Graders are studying Ancient History, and the Eighth Graders are covering Early American History. The students do group projects for each Unit such as making maps, timelines, games, and posters.
About Me
My name is Norma Nangju and I received a Bachelors in Environmental Engineering from Swarthmore College in 1997 and a Masters in Environmental Engineering from University of Louisville in 2001. In December 2013, I completed a Masters in Elementary Education from University of Louisville.
I bring to the classroom ten years of teaching experience from the Islamic School of Louisville. I have mentored many students who won awards in the Louisville Regional Science Fair, and I look forward to involve community members in mentoring Middle School students in their science fair projects in the future.
